The monkey on my back

I hit up Greenlake today.  I've been jonesin' to go rollerblading ever since that one warm day in february, but I couldn't because my blades went "Tango Union" early on in the season last year.  Spent the rest of the season trying to track down a place that sold good speed skates.  And to no avail.

Fact is, I find it odd that a city like Seattle didn't have a rollerblade seller on every other street corner, but whatever.  Because today, I found the same set I was coveting on the K2 website a year ago for half the price.  So I bought them.  And on our first run around the lake we started working out our differences.  New skates are always tricky.  You have to figure out the settings at the cost of your safety.  The fact the lake was strollers akimbo didn't help either.

The end result: Greenlake is 2.8 miles on the inside loop.  It took me 1.5 hours to go around 5 times.  And the only reason I stopped was because my Ipod ran outta juice.  I could feel the skin rubbing off my calves because I want wearing the right socks, but I didn't care.  My feet were going numb from supporting my weight on new frames and I didn't care.  All that mattered was getting into that open space where I could break away.  I'm no speed junkie, least I don't think I am, but for that hour and a half, nothing else mattered.  It was awesome.

I've lifted weights for 20 years now.  And where I know I've gotten better at recreational sports due to lifting, there's always beena disconnect between my style of training and the sports I'd like to play. Crossfit is fastly showing itself to be valuable in the real world.  My wind never suffered, I never stopped because I was out of breath or my because my legs were tired.  I only stopped to fiddle with my skate settings.

Today is/was a good day.

Now I'm gonna cook meat on an open flame, drink a gallon of water, and rest... justifiably.
